The Stone Circle Project
The Stone Circle Project is a site-specific, public sculpture commission conceived and executed in a period of six weeks during the Covid-19 lockdown. It consists of two components:
The Boat Circle is an installation of a labyrinth path leading to a found boat filled with stones collected from the Kasteelberg Mountain in the Riebeek Valley in South Africa. The artwork is interactive: visitors are invited to walk the path and place their own stones into the boat as a symbolic act.
The Amphi Circles are 16 stone circles, constructed with stones collected from the Riebeek Valley area. The circles serve as social distancing devices in the Royal Arts Town Amphitheatre (RATA) in Riebeek Kasteel. Through a series of workshops under the guidance of Emma Willemse, the circles were designed and constructed by The Arteri, a collective of young creatives in the Riebeek Valley community.
